Philippine national men’s football team skipper Chieffy Caligdong officially received his award as one of The Outstanding Young Men of 2012 in a ceremony at Malacañang Palace Wednesday.
Caligdong joined six other awardees in the event graced by President Benigno Aquino III, who praised the Azkals veteran in his speech.
“We have Chieffy Caligdong, who evokes that feeling of pride in all Filipinos whenever he scores in the football matches of our Philippine Azkals,” Aquino said in his speech addressed to all the awardees.
“Beginning today, you are no longer merely private individuals but symbols—symbols that clearly show our countrymen and the rest of the world that the Filipino is world class and that no matter how successful he or she becomes, the Filipino never loses the spirit of bayanihan and always comes back to help his fellow men.”
The TOYM awards recognized Caligdong for the “excellence and luster he brought to Philippine football” after playing for the Azkals for almost a decade and also teaching football to children in the grassroots level.
Aside from Caligdong, the other TOYM awardees are international singer apl.de.ap, broadcaster Jiggy Manicad, congresswoman Emmeline Aglipay, veterinarian.
