Literatus opens bid in style

Davao’s FIDE Master Austin Jacob Literatus opened his campaign in the 2013 National Age Group Chess Championship on Sunday, barely 24 hours after an ‘angel’ brought him back to the tournament he was close to missing.
The chess prodigy from Toril, who has an ELO rating of 2131, claimed his first victim in John Vincent Merabe in the 16 and Under category of the tournament serving as qualifying school for this year’s Asean Youth Age Group Chess Championships set this June in Thailand.
Literatus turned up at the Taguig City University Auditorium a day after his stint was saved by Kingking Copper Gold Mines, Inc. who funded his trip. The stint of Literatus and the rest of Davao’s bets were in jeopardy after the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) sent the tournament invitation only last March 27.
The tournament is under management of Jayson Gonzales of the NCFP who happens to be at odds with NCFP regional president James Infiesto of Davao.
Other Davao bets also won their opening Day assignments with John Ray Batucan upsetting a higher-ranked Mark Christian Nazario in the 20 and Under class. Batucan’s brother Neptali II was not as lucky as he dropped his first outing to McDominique Lagula in the same category.
Ella Grace Moulic also bowed to Rachelle Joy Pascua in the Girls 16 and Under category.(NJB)
