After a successful staging in Davao City, the regional series of Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Children’s Games for churches swings to Davao Oriental for its third leg on October 25 to 27.
The Davao City leg was held at St. Mary of the Perpetual Rosary Parish covered court in Buhangin, Davao City recently.
PSC national consultant on grassroots sports Doctor Serge Opeña, assessing the Davao City leg, said, “Rating is 3.58 which is excellent. There were 290 kids ages six to 14 years old. There were 34 Ate and Kuya volunteers from four churches.”
The bottomline is not numbers but results. Opena said that the children were grateful for the opportunity to play and that’s the intangible.
“Older children, however, wanted ball games,” Opeña said, adding that they will consider the suggestion raised in future legs.
Some parents who were present attested that their children enjoyed the games so much that they did not want to go home.
Participants were from host St. Mary of the Perpetual Rosary Parish, St. Francis of Assisi Parish in La Verna Subdivision, Buhangin, San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish in Talomo and International Churches of Christ (ICOC)-Davao.
The children were grouped into 10 with one Ate or Kuya volunteer who underwent training on leadership and rights of the child last October 19.
Games like hula hoop relay, t-shirt relay, Maria went to town, ball relay, sack race and tug-of-peace were then played on October 20. PSC Commissioner Charles Raymond A. Maxey keynoted the event and stayed for a while to witness the games.
Meanwhile, Ate and Kuya volunteers training is set in Lupon, Davao Oriental today, October 25, while the Children’s Games will be held tomorrow, October 26, in Lupon and on Saturday, October 27, in Mati City.
The regional series kicked off in Padada, Davao del Sur on September 21 and 22 with 300 participants and 30 Ate and Kuya volunteers. Games featured were patintero, Maria went to town, sack race, kadang-kadang and tug-of-peace. PSC-PSI
