IT’S OVER Davao City is virtual DAVRAA overall champion

Powerhouse Davao City virtually wrapped up another overall championship in the 2019 Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) meet going into the final two days of action.

A day after a pall of gloom befell the four-day old sports conclave among the region’s elementary and secondary athletes with the death of a 12-year old volleyball player from Davao Oriental, Davao City silently pulled away from the rest of the field leaving the outcome practically sealed. The Durians have amassed an insurmountable margin in the medal board with 120 gold medals, 86 silvers and 39 bronzes.

Hadia P. Eronico, a 12-year-old elementary volleyball athlete, died late Wednesday due to complication of an illness.

Department of Education (DepEd) 11 spokesperson Jenielito “Dodong” Atillo confirmed the death of Eronico, who plays volleyball for the Davao Oriental girls elementary team in the ongoing Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) 2019.

Eronico, a resident of Ilangay, Lupon, Davao Oriental, reportedly expired around 7:45 p.m. of January 30 at Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).

In distant second place overall is Tagum City Tagumpay with a gold-silver-bronze haul of 30-40-37, followed in third place by Panabo City with 25-31-31.

Trailing behind are Digos City at fourth with 20-19-28, Davao del Norte at fifth with 13-11-30, Davao del Sur at sixth with 7-11-25, and Compostela Valley at seventh 6-11-24.

The grieving Davao Oriental contingent is currently lagging at ninth overall with 4 golds, 6 silvers and 19 bronzes.

Mati City is still at the 10th spot with 4-6-6, and while struggling Island Garden City of Samal remains at the cellar with 0-1-4.
