MAN TO MAN Why the Pacman picked Thurman

Manny Pacquiao said a fight with Keith Thurman would be entertaining, the reason why the Filipino world champion agreed to a July 20 bout in Las Vegas.

“I liked the way he fought against Danny Garcia,” the 8-division champion said in a Yahoo Sports interview. “I thought his style would match up well with mine. We are going to give the fans a great fight and an exciting night.”

Undefeated Keith Thurman is Manny Pacquiao’s next foe.

Pacquiao, 40, owns the World Boxing Association “regular” welterweight title, while Thurman holds the WBA “super” welterweight strap.

“I believe Keith Thurman is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in boxing,” he said.

“That is why I am fighting him. He has faced and beaten two former welterweight champions, Robert Guerrero and Danny Garcia, and one current welterweight champion of the world, Shawn Porter. I have always looked for the best challenges in my career and Keith Thurman is an undefeated WBA super champion.”

However, Thurman has been relatively inactive due to a number of injuries. He fought one time in 2016 and in 2017 and was inactive in 2018.

He came back to defend his title against Josesito Lopez in January and barely won.

“I would say Keith Thurman has looked rusty in the past,” he said.

“I do not think that will be an issue when we fight because he has already fought once this year. I anticipate an action fight from him.”
