Bulldogs shock Green Archers to win Kadayawan basketball title

The National University (NU) Bulldogs shocked heavy-favorite De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers 77-70, in the finals of the 2019 Kadayawan Invitational Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night at the Davao City Recreation Center, Davao City.

The Bulldogs got back at the defending champion Green Archers, who beat them in the eliminations 86-72, behind a relentless defense and hot shooting.

Miguel Ocson delivered the goods for the Bulldogs, who are eyeing to duplicate their amazing UAAP 77 championship run in 2014, with 14 points. He was backstopped by Dave Ildefonso, who was consistent all tournament long, with 12.

The Green Archers, who were looking to make it two in a row in Davao, was paced by Andrei Caracut with 14 markers.

Vice Mayor Baste Duterte awarded the championship trophy and cash prize to the Bulldogs along with Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP) 11 regional director and Presidential Adviser for Sports Glenn Escandor.

It was the first Kadayawan title for the Bulldogs who were steered by veteran drillmaster Jamike Jarin with Dabawenyo former pro John Ferriols as assistant.

In the battle for third, Southwestern University upset fellow CESAFI squad University of the Visayas 77-74 to claim third spot. Dyll Roncal led the Cobras with 29 while Lamine Thiam had 15. The Green Lancers were led by Jancork Cabahug who dropped 17 and Sheldon Gahi with 14.

Dave Ildefonso of NU was named MVP while Jarin was hailed Best Coach.
