Eala continues ascent in rankings, climbs to no. 70

Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala has set a new career-high ranking of No. 70 in the WTA.

Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala continues her rise on the global women’s tennis stage, achieving a new career-high ranking of No. 70 in the WTA.

Her latest milestone follows a strong campaign at the Mutua Madrid Open, where she defeated Bulgaria’s Victoriya Tomova in the first round. However, she fell to familiar rival Iga Swiatek in a hard-fought three-set battle. Swiatek avenged her surprising loss to Eala at the Miami Open in March, where the young Filipino star shocked the tennis world by taking down the world No. 2.

Eala’s Miami Open breakthrough remains a defining moment in her career. She made history by reaching the WTA semifinals, defeating Jelena Ostapenko (No. 25), Madison Keys (No. 5), and Swiatek (No. 2) before falling to Jessica Pegula in a grueling match.

Her deep run in Miami propelled her into the Top 100, climbing from No. 75 to No. 72 before reaching her latest career-high No. 70 in Monday’s rankings update.
Up next for Eala is the Italian Open, where she could face former Miami Open opponents Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys.

Pegula ended Eala’s incredible Miami run with a 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-3 victory, securing her place in the WTA 1000 tournament’s final round.

Beyond the Italian Open, which runs from May 6 to 18, Eala—who turns 20 on May 23—is also set to compete in Roland Garros, scheduled for May 25 to June 8.
