The Philippine women’s national football team capped an impressive year with its best ever ranking in the FIFA women’s world list.
Based on the latest world rankings released on Friday, the Filipinas reached No. 38.
This meant they climbed six spots from No. 42 after going through the AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Perth, Western Australia under a new coaching staff.
Although losing to powerhouse Australia, the Filipinas won two games against higher-ranked Chinese Taipei and Iran to finish the Qualifiers with a 2-1 win-loss record. An inferior points cost them a chance to advance to the third round of the tough road to Paris.
The Filipinas battled the 11th-ranked Matildas before a record football crowd of 59,155. The 59,155 crowd figure was confirmed, eclipsing Optus Stadium’s previous football attendance record of 56,371 set in 2019 at the Isuzu UTE A-League Grand Final between Perth Glory and Sydney FC.
This completed the Philippines’ milestone year which saw the Filipinas making their mark in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup where they upset co-host New Zealand.
2023 also saw the Filipinas reaching the Asian Games quarterfinals.
