PH pole vault star Obiena places fourth in final test before Olympics

Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena finished fourth place in the Meeting de Paris in France on Sunday, his tast competition before the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The 6-foot-2 star was tied with Emmanouil Karalis of Greece after they cleared 5.75m in the Diamond League leg. Obiena fell short of a podium finish after he was not able to clear 5.85m twice and 5.95 in his last try.

Meanwhile, Obiena’s Paris opponents, Sweden’s Armand Duplantis topped the tilt after clearing 6.00m, the United States’ Sam Kendricks clinched a silver finish after finishing at 5.95m, while Thibaut Collet of France placed third with 5.85.

Up next for the World’s No.2 Pole Vaulter is the Olympics, where he is looking to improve from his 11th place finish during his stint in the Tokyo edition of the Summer Games.

Aside from his fourth-place finish in the Meeting de Paris, Obiena will be banking on his recent glory as he snagged back-to-back gold medals during his stint in Poland’s Memorial Czeslawa Cybulskiego.

He previously tallied a meet and stadium record of 5.87m in Poznan just a few days after his 5.97m first-place finish in Bydgoszcz.

He is among the 22-man delegation of the Philippines who will be competing in the Paris Games which will be held from July 26 to August 11.
