Magnolia Hotshots made an emphatic statement as they showcased their polished execution and airtight defense to dismantle Blackwater, 106-84, on Saturday, launching their PBA Philippine Cup campaign in dazzling fashion at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Zavier Lucero emerged as the star of the night with a stellar 21-point performance, leading a quartet of Hotshots who each contributed at least 13 points. Magnolia seized control from the get-go, setting the pace in the opening quarter and building unrelenting momentum that culminated in their commanding 106-81 lead.
For coach Chito Victolero, this resounding win represented vindication following a month of rigorous preparations after their heartbreaking single-game exit against top-seeded NorthPort during the Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals.
“We focused heavily on defense and ball movement during our four-week break, and I believe the results showed in tonight’s game,” Victolero shared. “Our defense clicked—we held them under 90 points, which is a good sign for us. Plus, our 21 assists demonstrate the improved motion offense we worked hard to establish.”
Magnolia’s defensive prowess stifled Blackwater’s offense, limiting them to a subpar 32-of-78 field shooting, while the Hotshots maximized their efficiency with a solid 38-of-70 clip. Despite committing 20 turnovers, Magnolia’s cohesion on both ends of the floor proved too much for their opponents.
Lucero wasn’t alone in the spotlight. Ian Sangalang delivered a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Mark Barroca added 14 points. Jerom Lastimosa and Calvin Abueva chipped in 13 points each, ensuring an all-around team effort across the board.
Blackwater, meanwhile, relied heavily on Christian David, who poured in 31 points, and Sedrick Barefield, who added 24 points and seven assists. However, the absence of other consistent scorers and a lackluster defense spelled doom for the Bossing, particularly in the first and third quarters, where Magnolia tallied 37 and 32 points, respectively, paving the way for an 85-66 cushion heading into the final stretch.
Victolero credited his players for their commitment during pre-conference practices, which yielded a plus-18 advantage in rebounds and a plus-12 edge in inside points. “The players did an excellent job preparing and focusing on the little things we may have overlooked in the last conference,” he added.
Magnolia has undoubtedly set the tone with this dominant display, sending a strong message to the rest of the league that they are ready to contend for the crown.
