Eala crashes out of Suzhou Open

Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala’s spirited campaign at the Suzhou Open came to a close in the quarterfinals, falling to sixth seed Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(0), in a tightly contested three-set battle.

Eala, seeded fourth and ranked World No. 58, entered the tournament riding a wave of strong performances across the WTA 125 circuit. She recently captured her maiden title at the Guadalajara Open, followed by quarterfinal finishes in São Paulo and a semifinal run at the Jingshan Tennis Open in China.

Against Golubic, Eala opened with confidence, breaking through the Swiss veteran’s signature one-handed slice backhands to dominate the first set, 6-2. But momentum shifted in the second as Eala’s error count rose, allowing Golubic to race ahead and level the match with a 6-2 set of her own.
