Suzhou, China — Alex Eala overcame a gritty challenge from Polish veteran Katarzyna Kawa to open her campaign at the WTA 125 Suzhou tournament with a hard-fought three-set victory on Tuesday afternoon.
The 20-year-old Filipina, seeded fourth and ranked world no. 58, needed two hours and 27 minutes to dispatch Kawa, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, in a rain-interrupted match that tested her composure and endurance. It was Eala’s first appearance in Suzhou, coming off a semifinal finish at the Jingshan Open just days earlier.
Eala broke away from a 2-all deadlock in the opening set before rain halted play for several hours. Upon resumption, she quickly closed out the first set, but Kawa, ranked no. 124 and playing with the poise of a seasoned 32-year-old campaigner, found her rhythm in the second frame to level the match.
The deciding set saw momentum swing back and forth, with ties at 3-3, 4-4, and 5-5. Eala, known for her fighting spirit and tactical maturity beyond her years, held firm in the closing stages to secure the final two games and seal the win.
The victory marks another step forward in Eala’s breakout season. Earlier this month, she captured her maiden professional title at the WTA 125 Guadalajara Open, becoming the first Filipina to win a singles crown at that level. Her rise through the rankings has been fueled by consistent performances across Asia and Latin America, and she continues to draw attention for her aggressive baseline play and mental toughness.
Eala now advances to the round of 16, where she will face Belgium’s Greet Minnen, world no. 106. A win would bring her closer to a second career title and further solidify her standing as one of Southeast Asia’s brightest tennis prospects.
The Suzhou tournament is part of the WTA 125 series, a tier designed to bridge the gap between ITF events and the main WTA Tour. For Eala, it offers another proving ground as she builds momentum toward higher-tier competitions and a potential top-50 breakthrough.
