The country will host the Philippine Women’s Open on Jan. 26 to 31, 2026 at Rizal Memorial Tennis Center outdoor hard courts in Manila. The schedule of the Women’s Tennis Association 125 event, however, falls on the second week of the Australian Open where world No. 50 Alexandra Eala is among the main draw players.
The Australian Open, the first of four Grand Slams, will be held Jan. 12 to Feb. 1 in Melbourne.
Nevertheless, the Philippine Tennis Association said the 20-year-old Eala signed up for the Philippine Women’s Open.
About 40 players from Canada, Mexico, Egypt, Belgium, China, Thailand, Serbia, Russia, Belarus, USA, Spain, Japan, Great Britain, Bulgaria, Italy, France and Indonesia have also registered.
“She’s (Eala) the inspiration for this tournament,” Philta secretary general and Navotas City Mayor John Rey Tiangco Friday during the press conference at Lanson Place hotel in Pasay City.
Also present were Philippine Sports Commission Chair John Patrick Gregorio and Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority chief Mark Lapid.
Officials said renovation of the venue will cost between PHP50 million and PHP70 million. (PNA)
