Filipina tennis standout Alex Eala is set to compete in the Philippine Women’s Open, organizers confirmed on Wednesday evening.
Fresh off her breakthrough appearance at the Australian Open, Eala announced her participation in the WTA 125 event shortly after touching down in Manila.
“Yes, I’ll be playing next week. I’m excited for it, and I hope people come out to support the Pinays,” she said upon arriving at NAIA Terminal 3. “This is a major moment for Philippine tennis, and it means a lot to all of us Filipina players.”
Eala received a wildcard entry from tournament officials, securing her place in the inaugural staging of the event. Her return follows a strong Australian campaign, highlighted by her victory in the Evonne Goolagong Cawley Trophy at the Kooyong Classic.
The Philippine Women’s Open will be held at the newly refurbished Rizal Memorial Tennis Center from January 26 to 31.
Eala arrived with her parents, Mike and Rizza, along with her coach, Joan Bosch. She was welcomed by PHILTA Secretary General John Rey Tiangco, who is also part of the tournament’s organizing committee.
Qualifying rounds for the singles draw begin this weekend, with tickets available through SM Tickets.
