SPORTwo-time champion Japan showed its class on Sunday, breaking through late in the first half and eventually defeating the Philippines, 7–0, in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup quarterfinals at Accor Stadium in Sydney.
Despite the scoreline, the Filipinas held firm for most of the opening half, with rookie goalkeeper Nina Meollo producing 10 saves in a gutsy performance. Japan’s win sent them to the semifinals alongside China, Australia and South Korea — all four securing automatic spots in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
For the Philippines, the story now shifts to the opportunity that still matters most.
🇵🇭 The Filipinas get another shot at reaching the World Cup for the second straight time when they face Uzbekistan on March 19 at Cbus Super Stadium in Robina. The winner claims one of the remaining Asian berths. The other play‑in match features North Korea against Chinese‑Taipei.
Filipinas coach Mark Torcaso said his squad understood the challenge of facing a world‑class Japan side and will regroup quickly for the decisive qualifier ahead.
Japan’s goals came from Mina Tanaka (two), Toko Koga (two), Remina Chiba, Manaka Matsukubo, Momoko Tanikawa and Riko Ueki. The Filipinas also saw Mallie Ramirez and Malea Cesar pick up injuries late in the match.
With their World Cup dream still alive, the Filipinas now turn all attention to Uzbekistan — a matchup that will define their 2027 campaign and their chance to return to football’s biggest stage.
