Gilas Women fall to France, 115-66, in FIBA World Cup qualifiers

The historic campaign of Gilas Pilipinas Women in the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament began on a tough note as Olympic silver medalists France overwhelmed the team early Thursday at the Astroballe in Lyon.

The Philippines suffered a 49-point defeat, 115-66, with the Paris-based squad asserting dominance throughout. At one point, Gilas Women trailed by as much as 51 points, struggling to find their rhythm as France unleashed an 11-0 run in the third quarter.

France set the tone early, outscoring Gilas Women 24-9 in the first quarter and never letting up on the way to a decisive victory. WNBA player Dominique Malonga led the French side with 21 points, nine rebounds, two steals, and a highlight dunk in the second quarter. Five other players contributed double-digit points, highlighting France’s depth.

The Olympic silver medalists dominated the boards 49-25 and controlled the paint 60-24. They also shot an efficient 45-of-76 (59.2%) from the field, while the Philippines managed 24-of-65 (36.9%).

For Gilas Women, Sumayah Sugapong and Afril Bernardino kept the fight alive with 13 points and 12 points, respectively, while UAAP MVP Kacey Dela Rosa added 11 points.

The team aims to regroup and bounce back against Germany on Friday at 12 a.m. Philippine time.
