The Filipinas are officially headed back to the FIFA Women’s World Cup after a composed and clinical 2–0 victory over Uzbekistan in Thursday’s play‑in match at Gold Coast Stadium in Australia.
With a World Cup berth on the line, both sides traded chances in a tense, scoreless first half. But the Filipinas wasted no time after the restart.
Angie Beard broke the deadlock in the 47th minute, smashing home a cross from Jael‑Marie Guy after two earlier near‑misses. Five minutes later, Guy delivered again—this time setting up Jackie Sawicki, who doubled the lead with a well‑timed header off another pinpoint cross.
Filipinas head coach Mark Torcaso praised Guy’s composure and impact in the biggest moments.
“Even before the game, I told Jael this is your time to shine,” Torcaso said. “She put in two fantastic crosses that changed the game. To see one of our future stars step up on a world stage and help us qualify is a testament to her and her family.”
Guy, one of the squad’s rising talents, said the team’s return to the World Cup was built on trust and collective effort.
“As someone younger on the team, this is something I’ve dreamed about since I was little,” she shared. “None of this would’ve been possible without working together and believing in each other. I’m just super grateful and excited to go to Brazil next summer.”
Torcaso also highlighted the team’s grit, unity, and leadership throughout the tournament.
“I’m extremely proud of every single player, including those who’ve already been on the World Cup stage,” he said. “They’ve stuck together as a group, led by captain Hali Long. Everything we’ve worked on over the last six weeks has led to this moment.”
With the win, the Philippines secures its second‑straight FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance after debuting in 2023. They now join Australia, Japan, China, and South Korea as confirmed qualifiers for Brazil 2027. Chinese Taipei and North Korea will battle for the final Asian slot.
