Phoenix Super LPG head coach Charles Tiu has spoken out in defense of forward Francis Escandor, who has recently been the target of online criticism amid his increased playing time in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, according to a report from Spin.PH.
Escandor’s expanded role this conference has drawn attention from fans, especially following reports that his father, Glenn Escandor, has begun supporting the Fuelmasters’ operations. But Tiu dismissed the notion that Escandor’s minutes are tied to anything other than performance.
“I think Francis is a solid PBA player,” Tiu told Spin.PH. “He’s been riding the bench the last couple of seasons sa Rain or Shine. Only now siya nakakalaro. But I had a chance to coach him before, I know what he can do. He is really a good shooter and a good defender.”
Tiu previously coached Escandor with Strong Group Athletics, giving him firsthand knowledge of the forward’s capabilities. He stressed that Escandor’s value goes beyond scoring and is reflected in his discipline and defensive reliability.
In Phoenix’s recent game against Rain or Shine, Escandor logged 27 minutes and 39 seconds, finishing with two points, five rebounds, and one steal. While the numbers were modest, Tiu said the impact was clear.
“He played great… he was solid defensively. You won’t see much mistakes from him,” Tiu said. “I need guys like that—guys I trust that can follow what we want and are smart players. Bilib naman ako kay Francis.”
Tiu added that injuries, including the absence of Kai Ballungay, have opened opportunities for players willing to step up.
Beyond on-court contributions, Tiu expressed sympathy for Escandor, saying the criticism has been unfair given the player’s work ethic and professionalism.
“Sometimes, it’s unfair. Actually, I feel bad for Francis. I don’t think he deserves any of it. He just really wants to play basketball,” Tiu said. “He trains every morning at 5 a.m. No excuses yun.”
Despite the noise, Tiu said Escandor has remained grounded and focused.
“To him, he is just one of the guys… No matter what, he is just another player and another teammate. And that’s what I appreciate kay Francis.”
