Filipina tennis star Alex Eala continued her sensational run at the Berlin Open, delivering a commanding performance to upset world No. 8 Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 6-4, and secure a spot in the semifinals of the WTA 500 grass-court tournament early Saturday (Manila time).
Eala came out firing, racing to a 3-0 lead as Svitolina faltered with a string of unforced errors. The Ukrainian held for 3-1, but the 21-year-old Filipina maintained her grip on the set with heavy baseline pressure and confident movement on the slick Berlin grass.
Svitolina briefly threatened a comeback, trimming the deficit to 4-3 after breaking serve. But Eala responded with poise beyond her years, breaking back from 15-40 down to restore a 5-3 cushion before calmly serving out the opener.
Despite Svitolina producing more winners in the first set (10 to Eala’s 8), her four double faults and eight unforced errors proved costly. Eala, by contrast, kept a tight ship with just one double fault and four unforced errors.
The second set opened with another momentum surge from Eala, who edged through a gritty opening game and capitalized on a Svitolina double fault to break for 1-0. Svitolina fought back to level at 2-2, but the Filipina once again showed remarkable composure under pressure.
Eala strung together three straight games for a 5-2 lead, putting one foot firmly in the semifinals. Svitolina mounted a late push to close the gap to 5-4, but serving for the match, Eala held steady and sealed the victory with a confident 6-4 finish.
“I can’t believe it. I’m in shock right now,” Eala said afterward. “Elina is a huge fighter. I’ve been watching her since I was a kid. It’s an honor to play against her.”
Up next for Eala is eighth seed and world No. 13 Linda Noskova, with a spot in the Berlin final on the line.
Meanwhile, the draw for next week’s Bad Homburg Open has been released. Eala will open her singles campaign against world No. 24 Elise Mertens. In doubles, she is set for a high-profile partnership with tennis legend Venus Williams, with the pair facing Shuko Aoyama and Liang En-shuo in their first match
