Nesthy Petecio’s bid for an Asian Games medal ended in the quarterfinals after the veteran Filipina boxer suffered a unanimous decision loss to China’s Yang Chengyu in the women’s 60-kilogram division on Monday at the Nishio Gym.
Petecio needed a victory to secure at least a bronze medal but struggled to find her rhythm against Yang, who took control early and stayed ahead throughout the bout.
The Chinese boxer won the opening round, 10-8, forcing Petecio to chase the fight in the succeeding rounds.
Yang effectively kept her distance while absorbing Petecio’s attacks, preventing the Filipina from mounting a sustained comeback.
All five judges scored the bout in Yang’s favor, ending Petecio’s campaign without a medal.
With Petecio’s exit, fellow Olympian Carlo Paalam remains the Philippines’ lone medal hopeful in boxing at the Asian Games.
