The municipality of Sta. Cruz last July 11 gave its consent to AboitizPower’s wholly-owned subsidiary Hedcor Tudaya, Inc. to build two more run-of-river hydropower plants with a total capacity of 13.6 MW on July 11 durring a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signing.
Dubbed Tudaya Hydropower Project, the Tudaya 1 Power Plant is proposed to be located upstream of the Sibulan A Power Plant while the Tudaya 2 Power Plant is to be built below the Sibulan B Power Plant.
“Hedcor is already part of the history of Sta. Cruz for almost six years now and with this agreement, we assure that the local government will continue to do our responsibility as Hedcor’s partner”, mayor Joey Ray Lopez said.
The exploration of Tudaya Hydropower started in 2010, and in early 2011, Hedcor engineers started the design of Tudaya 1 in Barangay Sibulan and Tudaya 2 in Barangay Astorga. Hedcor is currently working on the permits for the construction of the power plants.
Asian Development Bank (ADB) president Haruhiko Kuroda said Asians should take radical steps to patronize and invest in renewable energy. This is to fight the increased threat of climate change.
“An important key to lowering energy intensity is the elimination of fossil fuel subsidies and transition to renewable energy. Asia must also take radical steps to increase energy efficiency”, Kuroda said.
Hedcor is committed to promoting Cleanergy, AboitizPower’s brand of clean and renewable energy and will continue to look for more rivers to develop for run-of-river hydropower generation. To date, Hedcor has 18 run-of-river hydropower plants in the country with a total capacity of 150 MWs.
AboitizPower is the holding company for the Aboitiz Group’s investments in power generation, distribution, retail and power services. It is a major producer of Cleanergy, with several hydroelectric and geothermal assets in its generation portfolio, and also has non-renewable power plants located across the country. The company owns distribution utilities that operate in high-growth areas in Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. (For more details, please visit: www.aboitizpower.com and www.cleanergy.com.ph).
