The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said Tuesday its different field offices of the nationwide are currently conducting assessment activities at the provincial and municipal levels to determine further additional requirements for food assistance and implementation of Cash-for-Work (CFW) program in drought-stricken areas.
DSWD Secretary Corazon J. Soliman reiterated that the department has adequate funds to augment the resources of local government units (LGUs) in responding to the needs of affected families.
“Para po sa mga kababayan natin na naapektuhan ng el nino ang pamahalaan po ay handang tumulong at alam nyo naman na talagang tumutulong (For our countrymen who are afected by El Nino , we are assuring that the government is ready to augment the assistance and you know, it is really providing the assistance),” said Soliman.
Soliman reiterated that assistance were provided as early as November 2015 through the CFW scheme as requested by the farmers who wanted to have an alternative source of income due to the losses they incurred from their El Nino-damaged rice crops.
She also said that other provinces affected by drought were also given assistance such as Bukidnon, Misamis Occidental, Antique, Aklan, some parts of Iloilo and others.
To date, DSWD has provided a total of PHP1,270,615,194.13 worth of assistance to 1,172,260 affected families nationwide.
The amount includes the cost of food assistance and the implementation of CFW was funded under the Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation and Quick Response Funds of the Department for 2015-2016.
“Tuloy tuloy po iyan (it will be done continually),” she assured.
Currently, the highest number of beneficiaries are from Region XII and the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) with 330,060 and 338,314 families, respectively. (PNA)
