Tagum City cited for gains in nutrition

DAVAO CITY—Tagum City is acclaimed as the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) awardee for 2017 by the Regional Nutrition Council of the Department of Health for its significant achievement in implementing its nutrition programs that benefited the children and youth of the city.

For three consecutive years, Tagum City proved its exemplary management of nutrition programs which improved the nutritional status of Tagumenyos, thereby being bestowed with the CROWN recognition, the grand-slam feat that used improvement in nutritional status of a place as its success indicators.

The city received 1 million pesos cash prize, a plaque of recognition, and the prestigious Green Banner Award. The awarding ceremony took place at SMX Convention, Lanang, Davao City last Thursday, October 26, 2017.

Mayor Allan L. Rellon received the award, together with Hon. Jan Dmitri Sator, the City Nutrition Action Officer. The prestigious award was given by the National Nutrition Council Region XI led by Dr. Maria Teresa Ungson, the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator.

Stressing that implementing the city’s nutrition program is a cycle, Councilor Sator said  that achieving a great feat like this one doesn’t mean one must stop already.

“Kining nadawat nato nga award, magpamatuod lamang kini na dapat magpadayon kita sa pagbuhat sa mga maayong bulahaton sa nutrisyon aron ang programa mapadayon, ma-maintain nato ang nutritional status sa atong katawhan… Atong kanunayon kay dili kini siya isa ka programa kausa lang. Kini nga programa atong dapat ipaabot sa musonod na henerasyon sa atong siyudad sa Tagum.” (The award we received is a pure testament that we’re on the right track. We must continue our programs to also maintain the nutritional status of our constituents… We will do this not just once, but always. We must implement programs for the future generation of Tagum city.)

Mayor Rellon received recognition as well for his zealous support to the city’s nutrition programs. Likewise, Barangay Visayan Village Captain Dionesio Labastida was also given a plaque of appreciation for his commendable management of the Barangay Nutrition Program in his area of responsibility.

After the awarding ceremony, the National Nutrition Council launched its Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) which will kick-off this year until 2022. The six-year project would focus on reducing the stunting and wasting problem among children; deficiencies in vitamin A, iron, and iodine; hunger and food insecurity; overweight and obesity, among others.
