The Lunhaw Awards 2012, the first-of-its-kind recognition of individuals, groups or communities that use innovative and sustainable ways of living to protect and nurture the environment, will give a maximum of 15 winners from Davao City.
Named after a Cebuano term for color green, Lunhaw is a joint project of the Interface Development Interventions, Inc. (IDIS), the Davao Association of Colleges and Schools (DACS), City Agriculturist’s Office (CAO), the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and the Davao City Water District.
Jimmie-Loe Dela Vega, DACS executive director, said yesterday at Kapehan sa Dabaw, SM City Davao, the contest will complement to the city-wide campaign for proper solid waste management.
Also guesting, Dolly Remojo, chief of CENRO’s the environmental and waste management division, said the CENRO will help in monitoring the compliance of households with the city ordinance on solid waste management.
Mary Ann V. Fuertes, IDIS executive director, said each winner will receive P5,000 and a trophy and his or her story will be promoted as “green initiatives worth replicating in the city.”
Criteria for judging include environmental benefits, economic green practices, use of renewable energy, replicability, durability, continuity and innovation.
Winners will be selected from three categories namely individual household (small), community-based/association (medium), and institutions/malls/hotels (large).
Open to Dabawenyos currently living in Davao City, Lunhaw will be an annual awarding every December, in commemoration with the Davao City Organic Day on the third day of December.
Fuertes said Lunhaw also aims to promote sustainable lifestyle among Dabawenyos and help in mitigating the impacts of climate change.
