THE sister of the bus driver who was among those killed when his bus rammed a mountainside Tuesday morning in Samal Island defended the latter for what happened.
“He should not be blamed for what had happened because it was purely an accident. He even intentionally rammed bus against the mountainside rather than allow it to fall into the ravine which could killed more passengers,” Elma Rubio-Algabre said. “Let’s all accept it as an accident.”
The ill-fated driver was Sinforiano Rubio, resident of Babak district, Island Garden City of Samal.
Police investigation showed that Rubio could have decided to smash the bus against the mountainside after its brakes malfunctioned, causing it to fall on its side.
The Island City Express bus was on its way to Kaputian District from Davao City when the accident happened at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday upon reaching a curve at Sitio 20 in Barangay Poblacion.
Rubio and four passengers were killed on the spot while three others died while undergoing treatment at the Southern Philippines Medical Center (formerly the Davao Medical Center) in Davao City.
The other injured passengers were Mary Hazel Monion of Davao City; Milagros Cahanap of Malvar Street, Davao City; Marjun Rin Senoc of Barangay Sion, Igacos; and Alfredo Baja, a resident of Barangay Bunawan, Davao City, Jason Nepomoceno, 18, of Kaputian district; Zaldy Diototos, 25; and Jenelyn Manayaga of Matanos, Kaputian.
The Bangayan Group of Companies, which operates Island City Express, has assured Igacos City Mayor Anianao Antalan that it would extend financial assistance to the families of the victims.
Supt. Roland Agohob, chief of the Igacos police, said the 19 injured were immediately brought to SPMC, where they are now undergoing treatment. [ASA]
