ICT scores breakthrough year in Davao

Information Communications Technology (ICT) scored a breakthrough year in the Davao Region in 2012, a Davao-based ICT organization said.
Bert Barriga, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Davao executive vice president, yesterday bared the ICT development in the Davao region for 2012 while revealing bright prospects for 2013.
According to Barriga, Davao City is a preferred destination for competitive and cutting-edge ICT products and services. There are 12 stakeholders in the agency who are planning to create more sectors in order to expand the ICT services in the region.
A successful partnership was achieved between ICT-Davao and government agencies including Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) which produced the Voluntary Code of Good Practices on Decent Work of the ICT BPO Industry in Region 11; Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) which trained 2,500 scholars in English Proficiency and Medical Transcription and 60 scholars on trainer’s methodology; National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NICP); Department of Science and Technology (DOST) which staged a succescul expo in 2012 and produced home-grown resources for IT based competitions; and National Industry Cluster Capacity Enhancement Program (NICCEP) which is tapped by ICT entities in the local market.
The year also saw successful engagements which include Piclyf now known as Lifebit), installation of Pyroclave in SPH, embedding of X2Wave and Segworks Apps in HP’s H/W, extension of grant to the City Public Library’s by Beyond Access, and the opening of IBM’S Intelligent Operations Center and IBM Sales Office.
Barriga likewise bared the following investors who are interested in putting up their businesses in the year 2013 led by ICT giants Convergys, Teletech, Teleperformance, Startek and Hewlett-Packard.
DOLE and ICT partnership aims to increase productivity of ICT workers through capability building and awareness, improved participation in Code of Conduct among IT-BPOs, relevant advocacy programs to promote careers in IT-BPO (academe and ICT), capacitate PESO by increasing familiarity with IT-BPO recruitment considerations and aid IT-BPO recruitment through exclusive jobs fairs at least twice annually on 2013 and onwards.
