The office of the city veterinarian will be focusing on “animal production” in 2013 while rabies control continues.
This is according to Dr. Cerelyn B. Pinili, officer-in-charge of the City Veterinarian’s office in an interview.
The animal production program of the office for 2013 includes artificial insemination, boar semen extension, rehabilitation of animal production centers and the establishment of natural demo farming for goat and poultry.
According to Pinili “the creation of natural demo farming will be helpful because there is a high demand for livestock which are naturally grown.”
According to the initial Accomplishment Report of the City Veterinarian’s Office from January to November 2012, 117 heads of cattle and 707 heads of swine underwent artificial insemination. while six sessions of trainings and seminars were conducted on artificial insemination.
Besides the animal production program, the Rabies Control Program is “on-going.”
Dr. Pinili said, “we aim to totally eradicate cases of rabies by year 2020 in line with the national order.”
“It is also an order of the mayor’s office to focus on the eradication of rabies cases,” she added.
According to the initial accomplishment report of the city vets office, from the months of January to November 2012, 56,386 heads were vaccinated with anti-rabies, 394 sessions of information education campaigns conducted and 4,353 dogs impounded.
The report also shows achievements in the disease prevention control program to control the five “priority diseases” which are hog cholera, hemorrhagic septicemia, avian pest, fallpax, and rabies.
To prevent the spread of hemorrhagic septicemia, according to the report, 13,090 cattle, goats and carabaos were vaccinated against it.
To prevent the spread of hog cholera, according to the report, 12,916 animals were vaccinated against it.
To prevent the spread of New Castle Disease, according to the report, 195,163 animals were vaccinated against avian pest.
To promote good health and increase production, according to the report, 40,560 animals were administered with dewormers and vitamins.
To enhance the farmers’ knowledge on good animal husbandry practices, 194 trainings and seminars on animal production and disease management were conducted.
