The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-XI) will soon start its massive reforestation and rehabilitation efforts in the typhoon Pablo affected areas of Compostela Valley Province and Davao Oriental as part of its National Greening Program (NGP) target for 2013.
Through the Cash for Work Scheme, members of People’s Organizations (POs), local people and barangays residents will be hired for a continuous period of 90 days for site preparation, hauling of seedlings and the actual tree planting.
The workers shall be paid using the social mobilization fund of NGP following the minimum wage law which is presently at PhP 301.00 per day.
DENR Regional Executive Director Joselin Marcus E. Fragada said that somehow this Cash for Work scheme under the NGP will be the source of income for some typhoon victims in the area.
“Despite what happened, we will never cease from doing our best to reforest and rehabilitate the areas damaged by the typhoon and will also continue to plant seedlings in other parts of the region to accomplish our NGP targets for 2013 with the community as our partners,” Fragada said. The NGP target for 2013 in Compostela Valley is 4,372 hectares and Davao Oriental is 4,291 hectares with a total social mobilization budget of PhP 34,652,000.
Typhoon Pablo has also damaged plantations established from year 2009 to 2012 under the Upland Development Program and NGP covering a total area of 7,533 hectares.
Replanting of these areas shall also be done using the Cash for Work Scheme, but shall be utilizing rehabilitation funds. [DENR 11/Bing Cordova]
