As Mindanao’s Infrastructures projects begin to propagate, contractors in Davao city are faced with challenges on the growing demand on workforce.
Davao Contractors Association Center Incorporated President Michael Te said that there is an abundant number of workers in the city, but the number of ‘skilled’ workers are not enough.
He said that a abor force of a 50 million-building usually has a range of 80-100 workers, and Davao city currently has numerous infrastructure projects simultaneously executed, resulting to contractors hiring workers from other regions.
Global Link Chief Executive Officer Patrick Tan said that those applying for job in construction firms need not go far as Davao could now offer more opportunities.
He said premium is placed on demand for quality work.
The Philippine Constructors Association in cooperation with Technical Education and Skills Development Authority is currently intensifying their programs in enhancing the skills of construction workers to address the issue.
Some of these construction-related programs include carpentry, different types of welding, heavy equipment operation, masonry, scaffolding, tile setting, building wiring installation and construction painting among others.
Te added that there is also a need for more accredited contractors in the city.
“Currently there are 150 licensed contractors both from the private and government projects and we need more.” Te said.
He encourages more contractors to be a member of DCACI, to take part in the development of Davao City, working side by side with the government in expediting projects and get to their targets.
