OWWA asks scholars to opt for short courses

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration in Davao Region has widened the scope of its scholarship grants by encouraging children of OFWs to avail themselves of the Skills-for-Employment Scholarship Program (SESP).

Carmelo Elaya, officer in charge of OWWA, said active members of OWWA can apply for the scholarship program for their children who are still studying in the elementary, high school and college levels.

For these students to qualify, they need to pass a set of examinations.

He said that children of OFWs in the Davao Region can take the national competitive examination which is conducted every year for the education for development scholarship program (EDSP), leading to a four-year course.

But Elaya said the OFW is encouraging children of OFWs to apply for the shorter Skills-for-Employment Scholarship Program (SESP) which assures them of immediate employment.

Qualified applicants are entitled to have P14, 500 worth of scholarship per year. This year, a total of 39 students graduated from their technical vocational courses program.

Elaya said the for Skills-for-Employment Scholarship Program (SESP) encourage students to take technical vocational courses since short courses are in demand in local and international industries.. Qualified dependents of active OWWA members can enroll in any schools accredited by TESDA.

The program encourages those finished the vocational courses to pursue course leading to bachelors’ degrees.

“The scholarship program will be extended for 2ndyear 3rdyear high school students who would like to continue their studies,” said Elaya.

Elaya stressed that OWWA members whose income ranging from 600dollars monthly and above are not qualified for the said Scholarship Program.
