The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has clarified on Saturday that social media reports claiming a minor sustained a firecracker-related injury in Toril, Davao City was inaccurate.
In a statement, DCPO Acting City Director Police Colonel Mannan Muarip said a thorough investigation conducted by the Toril Police Station established that the child was not involved in the use of any firecracker or “lantaka.”
Muarip said police personnel identified, located, and personally interviewed the family of the child involved.
He said based on the investigation, authorities found that the injury was caused when the child played with a plastic bottle, poured alcohol into it, and lit it, resulting in burns to his hand.
He also said the findings were verified on the ground and confirmed by the child’s parent, disproving claims circulating on social media that the incident was firecracker-related.
“We call on everyone, especially those posting on social media, to exercise responsibility and ensure proper validation of information before publication,” Muarip said.
He also warned that unverified and inaccurate reports can create unnecessary fear and panic among the public.
The DCPO reiterated its commitment to transparent, factual, and evidence-based policing, assuring the public that all reported incidents are carefully investigated before conclusions are made.
Muarip also warned individuals who intend to violate Davao City Ordinance No. 060-02, or the Firecracker Ban, stressing that enforcement will be strict.
“Anyone caught violating the firecracker ban will be charged accordingly. We will strictly enforce the law to protect the safety of our community, especially our children,” he said.
The DCPO urged the public to rely on verified information, coordinate with authorities, and support law enforcement efforts in maintaining peace, order, and public safety in Davao City.
