Major dev’ts set to reshape Davao City’s events, commercial, parking infrastructurel

Davao City is poised for a new wave of commercial and infrastructure growth as multiple investors prepare to roll out major projects, including a P500-million convention center and new parking facilities in key areas of the city.

Christian Cambaya, head of Investor Assistance Servicing Unit of the Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIPC), said significant developments are expected to unfold in the coming months, driven by strong investor confidence and the city’s stable business environment.

Cambaya said one of the biggest projects in the pipeline is a P500-million convention center in Maa, with the developer now completing the required permits.

He said once constructed, it is expected to become one of the largest event venues in Davao City and that the facility will feature expansive event spaces along with additional commercial components.

Cambaya said investors continue to choose Davao because of its peace and order situation and the availability of stable, affordable electricity, factors that make large-scale developments feasible and attractive.

Meanwhile, Cambaya reported that a new parking infrastructure is also being lined up to address congestion and support commercial growth.

Cambaya confirmed that Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC), owner of Jollibee and Chowking, has expressed interest in developing a 2,000-square-meter property across Abreeza Mall into a parking area.

He said city officials met with JFC officials in October, where the company also showed interest in potential public-private partnership (PPP) projects.

“We met with the owner of JFC (Dr. Cruz) in October this year because they want to engage the city government of Davao for PPP projects. We had offered several projects like the area in DCOTT currently being utilized as parking. We’re offering that and told them the city is open for the company to submit a proposal to develop it. Ang proposal niya is they are looking at developing a few floors for commercial and succeeding floors for parking and succeeding floors for government offices,” Cambaya said during the Business Insights at NCCC Victoria Plaza.

Cambaya also mentioned that Alsons Development and Investment Corporation (Alsons Dev) is preparing to open a temporary pay parking area on its Aldevinco property as its redevelopment masterplan continues.

In October this year, Alsons Dev announced that it will start redeveloping the Aldevinco Shopping Center property. The site, located at the corner of C.M. Recto and Roxas Avenue, has been a prominent cultural and commercial landmark in downtown Davao for decades.

The company said the project will transform the historic area into a modern mixed-use development designed to support Davao City’s continued urban growth.

Cambaya noted that while interest is growing, the city has yet to secure a committed investor specifically for a dedicated multi-level parking building.
