Defense team hails SC ruling, declares impeachment case vs VP Sara closed

The defense team of Vice President Sara Duterte welcomed the Supreme Court’s (SC’s) decision denying the motion for reconsideration filed by the House of Representatives, saying the ruling definitively settles the constitutional issues surrounding the impeachment case.

In an official statement dated January 29, 2026, the defense acknowledged the High Court’s resolution rejecting the House’s attempt to reverse the Supreme Court’s July 25, 2025 decision, which declared the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte unconstitutional.

The defense expressed gratitude to the Court for what it described as a “clear and authoritative ruling that lays down firm guidance on the constitutional limits and proper handling of impeachment proceedings.”

According to the statement, the decision provides long-needed clarity on how impeachment cases should be treated under the Constitution.

“With these issues settled by the Court, the matter is now closed,” the defense team said.

The defense team added that the country should now move forward and focus on more pressing national concerns.

The vice president had been the subject of four impeachment complaints filed before the House of Representatives.

The first three failed to advance, while the fourth moved forward after a resolution supporting it was signed by at least one-third of House members.

Despite this, the Supreme Court En Banc ruled that the impeachment proceedings were unconstitutional.
