RTC grants Davao Light authority to operate Samal power system

The Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 34 in Panabo City has issued a Writ of Possession in favor of Davao Light and Power Co., Inc., allowing the utility firm to take over the power distribution system serving the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS).

The court issued the writ as part of Davao Light’s effort to take over the power system in Samal, after Republic Act No. 12144 gave the company the right to expand its service to parts of Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro.

Under the court order, Davao Light is now authorized to assume responsibility for the distribution facilities to ensure the continued, safe, and reliable delivery of electricity to consumers in IGaCoS.

The company said the transition will be conducted in compliance with all applicable legal, regulatory, and operational requirements.

Before the passage of RA 12144, power distribution in Samal was being handled by the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative, Inc. (NORDECO).

After its franchise was expanded, Davao Light started legal steps to take over the current power facilities, a process allowed by Philippine law to ensure public service continues smoothly.

Davao Light expressed hope for NORDECO’s full cooperation to facilitate a smooth transition of operations.

“The earlier Davao Light can begin operating in its expanded areas, the sooner we can deliver cost-effective and world-class electric service,” the company said.

Davao Light also noted that improved service is expected to benefit households, businesses, and the local government of IGaCoS.

The company reiterated its commitment to enhancing power reliability and service quality as it prepares to formally take over distribution operations in Samal.
