Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has welcomed the P700 million allocation for the development of Mati Airport in Mati City, Davao Oriental, describing it as a crucial driver of economic expansion and tourism growth in the province.
The funding is included in the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) proposed 2026 budget. During the agency’s budget interpellation last November, Go pressed for sustained financing and timely execution of the project, stressing that delays could undermine its potential benefits.
As an ex officio member of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Board representing the Senate, Go said the Mati Airport would function as an alternative entry point to the region. Once operational, it is expected to help ease congestion at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City while cutting travel time for passengers bound for Davao Oriental.
“Sana po’y tuloy-tuloy na rin po ang construction nitong Mati Airport na dati pa nating ipinaglalaban,” the senator said, reiterating the need for consistent government backing until the airport becomes fully operational.
Go emphasized that enhanced air connectivity could unlock significant economic opportunities, particularly for tourism. Davao Oriental hosts key attractions such as Mount Hamiguitan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dahican Beach in Mati City, and Pusan Point in Caraga—destinations that stand to benefit from improved accessibility through increased visitor arrivals, job generation, and new investments.
The senator first pushed for the prioritization of the Mati Airport project during the 58th Araw ng Davao Oriental celebration on July 1, 2025, calling on stakeholders to work together to strengthen the province’s tourism industry.
“With the P700 million allocation now secured, the focus should be on ensuring that transportation infrastructure directly supports tourism, business growth, and broader economic development,” Go said.
He added that modern transport systems play a vital role in national progress, noting that improved connectivity helps link communities and open doors to sustainable growth.
