The 21st City Council on Tuesday paused before its regular session to offer a prayer for former President Rodrigo Duterte as he faces a confirmation of charges hearing at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands.
The council’s prayer showed its call for fairness, peace, and unity while the case is being heard abroad.
Councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz led the prayer and asked that the legal process be fair and just.
“We pray that fairness, clarity, and due process will prevail. Grant him strength, peace of mind, and courage during a challenging time,” Dalodo-Ortiz said.
She also prayed for Duterte’s family and supporters and asked the public to stay calm and united even if people have different views.
“Comfort his family and supporters, and calm any unrest or division among our people. Remind us all that even in moments of uncertainty, You remain sovereign and in control,” she added.
Duterte is facing three counts of crimes against humanity before the ICC. The charges cover alleged incidents from 2011 to 2019.
The first count involves alleged killings in Davao City when he was mayor, said to be linked to the so-called Davao Death Squad.
The second count refers to alleged killings of high-value targets during his time as president.
The third count involves alleged killings and attempted killings during police operations in barangays while he was president.
The confirmation of charges hearing, scheduled from February 23 to 27, will decide if the case will move forward to a full trial.
