The city government of Davao is moving forward with its plan to modernize its official fleet by transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs), marking a significant push toward sustainability and reduced fuel dependence.
Harvey Lanticse, acting head of the City Information Office (CIO), said the initiative stemmed from a 2025 directive issued by Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte to begin preparations for EV procurement.
“Even before the fuel crisis, in 2025, as part of his sustainability initiatives, Mayor Baste instructed the office to begin purchasing electric vehicles for the Davao City LGU vehicle fleet,” Lanticse said.
At present, the city is in the process of acquiring 54 EV units, including multipurpose and disaster response vehicles.
Lanticse said these units are expected to arrive in batches starting this year as procurement progresses.
“Moving forward, we will prioritize the acquisition of electric vehicles over diesel-powered ones,” he added.
He said the transition supports the goals of the Electric Vehicle Industry Act, which mandates that at least five percent of vehicle fleets in government and private institutions must be electric.
Lanticse also emphasized that the shift is part of a broader strategy to promote environmental sustainability while mitigating the effects of rising fuel prices.
“We will continue to invest in a greener and more sustainable transportation system within the LGU to cushion the impact of high fuel prices,” Lanticse said.
