Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Tuesday pushed for stronger government preparedness, warning that the conflict could trigger a “domino effect” on the Philippine economy particularly on fuel prices and vulnerable sectors.

Go, vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, expressed concern that the impact of the war may extend beyond overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) stationed in the region and spill over to transport workers, small businesses, and daily commuters at home.

His statement came amid renewed proposals to suspend the excise tax on petroleum products as a safeguard against possible spikes in gasoline and diesel prices driven by global supply disruptions.

“Ang importante ay buhay tayo at magtulungan tayo, bumangon tayo, kaya natin ito, tayo lang mga Pilipino ang magtutulungan,” he added

The Philippines has also deployed millions of OFWs across the Middle East, making their safety and job security a key concern whenever instability erupts in the region.

Go said he and his colleagues in the Senate are prepared to support measures that would cushion the impact of the crisis, particularly for low-income families.

He also urged concerned government agencies to intensify monitoring efforts and roll out contingency plans to protect both Filipino workers abroad and consumers at home.

Economic managers have previously noted that fuel price volatility can significantly affect inflation, which in turn impacts food prices and overall household expenses making early intervention crucial to prevent further strain on ordinary Filipinos.

“Even the smallest form of assistance will go a long way for struggling Filipinos during this time of crisis,” Go said.
