The 21st Davao City Council approved on Thursday temporary road closures to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming Celebrate Jesus event and Holy Week activities.
At the request of the Cathedral of Praise, Roxas Avenue Rotunda, from the Post Office to Marco Polo, will be closed to vehicular traffic on March 27 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on March 28 from noon to 9 p.m. for the “Celebrate Jesus” celebration.
Msgr. Paul A. Cuison requested the road closures to ensure the safety, solemnity, and orderly conduct of religious activities throughout Holy Week.
The ordinances, proposed by Committee on Transportation and Communications Chairperson Councilor Jose Marie Bernardo R. Baluran, will take effect immediately upon approval.
“These road closures are necessary to ensure the safety and order of the faithful during our important religious celebrations,” Baluran said.
The council also approved road closures for Holy Week, which will run from midnight of March 29 (Palm Sunday) until 11:59 p.m. of April 5 (Easter Sunday). San Pedro Street, in front of San Pedro Cathedral, will be closed for events including the Blessing of Palms, installation and removal of steel structures for the Sugatan, the Blessing of Fire, and re-enactments of the Sugat, Encuentro, and Salubong.
On Good Friday, April 3, additional closures will be enforced from 3 a.m. to 9 p.m. along Quimpo Boulevard (Felcris Centrale), Rizal Extension, C. De Jesus St. (UIC), Bonifacio St., CM Recto Ave., Roxas Extension (along Red Cross), Ponciano St., Legaspi St., Magallanes St., and the Bonifacio Rotunda. From 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., a similar route from San Pedro Cathedral through C.M. Recto Ave., Roxas Extension (along Red Cross), Ponciano St., Bonifacio St., Legaspi St., Magallanes St., and Bonifacio Rotunda will also be closed.
