VP Sara criticizes Marcos’ response to OFW concerns amid Middle East conflict

Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday expressed solidarity with overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) affected by the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, while criticizing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. over concerns raised by some OFWs regarding the government’s response.

The Vice President issued the statement after she was asked in an ambush interview in Digos City about sentiments from some OFWs who were reportedly disappointed that the President did not personally welcome repatriated Filipinos at the airport.

When pressed if the issue supports her earlier criticisms of the administration, Duterte reiterated her concerns about Marcos’ leadership.

“Marami siyang kakulangan bilang Presidente. Hindi lamang sa pagbibigay ng simpatya at empathy sa ating mga kababayan. More than that ay ‘yung problema at iskandalo sa paggamit ng pera ng bayan,” she said.

Duterte said her office is ready to assist Filipinos working abroad who have been affected by the conflict involving Iran and other countries in the region.

“Nakikiisa tayo sa pinagdadaanan ng karamihan nating mga kababayan na Overseas Filipino Workers dahil sa kaguluhan dahil sa giyera doon sa Middle East. At kung ano man iyong matulong ng Office of the Vice President, ay gagawin namin. Ipaalam lang sa amin paano kami makakatulong,” Duterte said.

The Philippine government continues to monitor the situation in the Middle East and assist nationals who wish to return home amid the escalating tensions.
