The People’s Republic of China, through the Chinese Consulate General in Davao City, turned over a donation of 580 wheelchairs to the city government of Davao during a ceremony held at Rizal Park on Wednesday.
The wheelchairs will be distributed to Davao City persons with disabilities (PWDs) through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and the Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office (PDAO), in support of ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and the quality of life of beneficiaries across the city.
Present during the ceremony were Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, Consul General Zhao Xiuzhen, officials from the Chinese Consulate, city officials, department heads, and wheelchair recipients.
Duterte highlighted the longstanding friendship between Davao City and China, emphasizing that the partnership has continued to benefit Dabawenyos through various initiatives and assistance programs.
“The relationship between Davao and China has always been more than just a partnership—it is a friendship nurtured through years of collaboration, cultural exchange, and shared aspirations,” Duterte said.
According to the mayor, China’s support has extended beyond major infrastructure projects and has reached communities through programs that directly help residents.
“The support we have received over the years extends beyond macro infrastructure projects and groundwork initiatives like the Bucana Bridge. It has also involved the provision of various forms of assistance that have benefitted thousands of Dabawenyos on a personal level,” he said.
Duterte thanked the Chinese government for the wheelchair donation, describing it as another meaningful contribution that supports the welfare and rights of Dabawenyo PWDs.
The mayor also shared a message for the beneficiaries, expressing hope that the wheelchairs would provide comfort and convenience in their daily lives.
“Nag hinaot kami nga ang gihatag kaninyo nga wheelchairs makatabang aron mahimong hapsay, komportable, ug malinawon ang inyong adlaw-adlaw nga kinabuhi. Kami magpadayon sa paghatag og mas maayo nga serbisyo alang kaninyong tanan, karon ug sa umaabot pa nga mga tuig,” he said.
The mayor added that the turnover ceremony underscored the continuing cooperation between Davao City and the People’s Republic of China, particularly in initiatives that support vulnerable sectors and strengthen community welfare programs.
