Government agencies and industry stakeholders have stepped up efforts to strengthen and modernize the hog industry in Mindanao, reaffirming commitments to recovery, disease resilience, and long-term sustainability during the 32nd National Hog Convention and Trade Exhibit held at SMX Convention Center in Davao City on May 14.
Speaking on behalf of Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., Agriculture Assistant Secretary Michael J. Garcia said the Department of Agriculture (DA) remains focused on sustained interventions to help hog raisers recover from losses and improve productivity and competitiveness.
Garcia said the DA continues to expand access to breeder stocks, veterinary support services, financing programs, and modern production technologies as part of efforts to stabilize and grow the swine sector.
“These interventions are designed to help our hog raisers recover and become more competitive through better access to technology, financing, and animal health support systems,” Garcia said.
Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Chair Secretary Leo Tereso A. Magno underscored the need for stronger coordination between government and producers, stressing that industry recovery depends on consistent engagement and practical solutions to long-standing challenges such as disease outbreaks and market volatility.
Acknowledging the continuing effects of African Swine Fever (ASF), Magno said government support must remain responsive and grounded on the realities faced by hog raisers on the ground.
“We in government have one job dapat tulungan namin kayo,” Magno said.
He also urged stakeholders to build on the momentum generated by the convention and ensure continued collaboration beyond the event.
He also called for sustained dialogue between government and industry players.
Magno also reiterated support for DA initiatives on swine repopulation, strengthened biosecurity systems, and improved disease surveillance as key components of long-term industry recovery.
Both the DA and MinDA emphasized that sustained public-private partnerships will be essential in building a more resilient, competitive, and future-ready hog industry in Mindanao and across the country.
