A temporary Bailey Bridge in Barangay Callawa, Davao City, officially opened to the public on Sunday afternoon, restoring a crucial transport link nearly two months after the original Callawa Bridge collapsed due to severe flooding.
The Bailey Bridge was constructed as an interim solution to immediately restore accessibility following the collapse of the Callawa Bridge on May 19, 2026. The bridge gave way after heavy rains triggered by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the Easterlies caused massive flooding in the area.
According to the Department of Public Works and Highways Region 11 (DPWH 11), the temporary bridge is now operational, allowing residents, motorists, and travelers to once again pass through the route, significantly improving mobility and reconnecting affected communities.
DPWH 11 also said that only light vehicles are currently allowed to use the Bailey Bridge to ensure public safety while traffic conditions and the structure’s performance are continuously monitored.
DPWH 11 explained that the opening of the temporary bridge forms part of the national government’s efforts to swiftly restore connectivity in disaster-affected areas.
The agency added that the opening also follows the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to fast-track infrastructure interventions that will immediately reestablish access and ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and goods while permanent rehabilitation works are underway.
