CGDSEM warns public after 4 drowning incidents in 10 days

The Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) is urging the public to exercise heightened caution around the water after recording four drowning incidents within its Area of Responsibility (AOR) from August 1 to 10, 2026.

CGDSEM said the four drowning incidents recorded in just 10 days underscore the continuing risks faced by people engaging in water activities and the need for greater vigilance among beachgoers, boaters, families, and communities.

The Coast Guard issued the reminder as water-related activities continue to draw residents and visitors to beaches, rivers, swimming areas, and other bodies of water across Southeastern Mindanao.

“Your safety is a shared responsibility,” CGDSEM said in a statement.

CGDSEM also emphasized that individuals must take necessary precautions before engaging in swimming, boating, and other water-related activities.

The district urged the public to always wear appropriate safety gear, avoid swimming in hazardous or unfamiliar waters, and closely supervise children whenever they are near bodies of water.

It also reminded the public not to underestimate the strength and unpredictability of the sea, particularly when weather and water conditions are unfavorable.

“Stay alert, stay safe, and never underestimate the power of the sea,” CGDSEM said.

The Coast Guard reiterated that preventing drowning requires shared responsibility, from observing safety precautions to making informed decisions about when and where to enter the water.

As CGDSEM continues to monitor maritime and coastal areas within its jurisdiction, it appealed to the public to prioritize safety and exercise extreme caution whenever near or on the water.
