The word madayaw, from the Mandaya language, means good, beautiful, and bountiful. The city is home to eleven ethnolinguistic tribes: the Ata, Bagobo-Klata, Bagobo-Tagabawa, Iranun, Kagan, Maguindanaon, Maranao, Matigsalug, Obu Manuvu, Sama, and Tausug. Their traditions, dances, music, artistry, and stories give life and meaning to every Kadayawan celebration. They remind everyone that while each culture is unique, they all share a common home where respect, harmony, and understanding flourish.
Nature has been equally generous to Davao. Blessed with fertile lands and a favorable climate, the city produces some of the country’s finest agricultural products. The elegant waling-waling, known as the Queen of Philippine Flowers, reflects the beauty and uniqueness of Davao’s forests and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the environment for future generations.
