A 101-year-old retired Philippine Army sergeant and 39 other war veterans were honored by the Office of the Vice President (OVP) in Davao City in recognition of their courage, sacrifice, and decades of service to the country.
The veterans were recognized during the recent “Saludo: Mga Kuwento ng Tapang at Paglilingkod,” as part of the observance of National Heroes Day.
Among those honored was Retired Sgt. Florante Mallari, 101, the oldest veteran who attended the gathering. His presence highlighted the enduring legacy of a generation that served the country through some of its most difficult periods.
Vice President Sara Duterte, who led the OVP tribute, underscored the veterans’ contributions and selfless service to the nation.
The gathering also emphasized that heroism extends beyond those who made the ultimate sacrifice, recognizing individuals who quietly served, endured hardships, and continued to contribute to their communities.
In her message, Duterte also encouraged the veterans to strengthen their relationship with God, describing faith as an important source of strength as they enter another chapter of their lives.
Women’s rights advocate and former legislator Luzviminda Ilagan, who served as guest speaker, highlighted the deeper meaning of freedom and the role of veterans in defending and preserving it.
She emphasized that freedom should not be understood simply as the absence of war or conflict, but as the ability to live with dignity, love, serve others, and use that freedom for the common good.
The OVP said the stories of the 40 veterans serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served the country and as an inspiration for future generations.
