More investors eyeing Minda ’s energy sector

More than thirty local and foreign investors have shown interest in Mindanao ’s energy sector. This was apparent during the recent Mindanao Investors Forum held at The Marco Polo Davao aimed at enticing more players to join the sector.
Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes, the host, bared that there is a peculiar situation in Mindanao and that the potential richness of renewable energy, especially hydro, solar, and biomass, must be taken advantage of.
Although 70 percent of the country’s total energy is generated from Northern Luzon, Mindanao is still considered the load center, he said.
Of the thirty initial investors that have expressed interest to invest in the energy sector, one of which is the hydro power plant project of the Aboitiz firm.
Reyes stressed that Mindanao needs at least 600 megawatts to cope with the targets posted in the Power Development Plan up to 2017.
This has pushed DOE to encourage more players to join the industry.
Meanwhile, the energy secretary clarified that his office is still designing a series of meetings to gather concerned agencies, like the commission on elections, department of education, and the department of interior and local government to merge efforts in securing energy in the coming election season.
“We will make sure that all power systems from the generation, to transmission, to distribution to the electricity utilization will be secured.” he said.
Reyes calls the group as the energy subset which will overlook the energy security during election. “We in the energy sector want to have a smooth election.” he added.
He also clarified that as energy chief, he has not yet recommend anything to the President. The recommendation will only follow after convening key persons in the DOE as well as the players in the energy subset. [PIA 11]
