Canon SFP Industry sales up by 45% amid the downtrend

Single function printers (SFP) had a downtrend of three percent in 2009, but the Pixma SFP printers of Canon had a 45% increase.
This increase can be attributed to the economic crisis and typhoon Ondoy, according to the marketing manager of consumer systems product division, Jill Santiago in a press conference last May 24 at the Kangaroo Coffee Company along Tionko Avenue, Davao city.
Santiago said most of the sales came from areas affected by Ondoy, where offices and households purchased replacements of broken printers.
Canon had a 30% increase in the total Philippine inkjet printer market from 2008 to 2009. Pixma printers had 47% increase in sales while the industry increased by 3% last year. In the same year, the multi-function printers (MFP) industry increased by 16%, while Pixma-Canon had 53%.
Santiago claims that Canon is the top one in the Philippine market, saying they are higher by one to two percent based on the reports of two independent bodies forecasting shares in the market through shipment and sell-through from stores.
“One reason why most people buy our printers,” she said, “is the full ink cartridges that come with entry level printers, unlike other brands that only provide inks for demonstration. “It’s because we wanted to give our clients the best experience with, and get the most value of, our products even at the entry level,” she added.
The Canon Think Tank System is the world’s first individual ink system, according to Ace Porlet, training specialist. He said individual ink cartridge is an advantage for cost-saving because if only one cartridge is out of ink, then there’s no need to purchase the entire set of colors.
Canon was also the first to launch the bubble jet printer, Porlet said, explaining that it is the process of “heating the ink to boiling point until it forms a bubble. The bubble expands until there is no room left in the nozzle then it is projected to the paper.” [Lorie Ann A. Cascaro]
