Malanyaon stops small-scale mining

Small-scale miners in Sitio Bangol in the town of Tarragona, Davao Oriental will have to look for other sites to mine as Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Malanyaon issued a cease and desist order against all forms and methods of small-scale mining in the area shortly before the weekend.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Dante Ganir said in a statement that the provincial government informed the more than one thousand miners in the area to stop their mining activities immediately.
Small-scale miners have been given until Thursday this week, July 26, 2012, to haul all their equipments and ore that have been harvested out of the area, lest the government force them out after the said date.
The order stemmed from the Executive Order No. 12, which was issued by Governor Malanyaon last July 17 after consultation with the police, the military and the local officials.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau 11 under Edilberto Arreza first issued a cease and desist order lasy June 19 on all small-scale mining operations in the tri-boundaries of Mati City, Manay and Tarragona in particular the area where the tenement of the Oro East Mining Company, Inc. is located.
The order came about after more than a thousand gold diggers reportedly started trooping in the area searching for the elusive gold.
Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat also formed a task force to look into the matter after the village chief of Don Salvador Lopez reported to her that almost ten thousand small-scale miners are now in the area.
Rabat’s Executive Order No. 60-02-12 was issued on Thursday, July 5, and calls for the creation of a fact-finding team composed of officials from the city environment office, city engineers, city health, city planning, and the city disaster risk reduction management.
The task force was tasked to go to the area within ten days and come up with an official report and submit the same to the mayor not later than July 24.
MGB 11 director Edilberto Arreza said the gold-rush area is located in Barangay Tubaon, Tarragona.
