The City Government of Davao is expecting the construction of three flyovers in the national highways within the next two years which will be implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways.
According to City Planning and Development Office chief Roberto Alabado III, these flyovers will be located in Ulas crossing, Matina crossing and Panacan-Diversion Road junction. However the Ulas junction flyover will be the first to be built with construction works to be started in January of 2014.
“Sure na sure” (Very sure) Alabado said of the Ulas, flyover project. The other two flyovers are slated to be constructed in the next two years. The City Planner said that preparatory works such as road widening and the transfer of electric posts and other structures will soon be started.
The City Government is currently preparing the Annual Investment Plan (AIP) of these three flyovers so that it could be included in the priority projects of the city. The AIP is expected to be submitted this week to the City Council.
“The national government is now strict; they want these projects to be the priority projects of the local government before they could fund it.” Alabado said.
These flyovers are part of the Presidential Bridge program (Mega Bridges for Urban and Rural Development Project) each flyover is costing around P250-million. They are modular steel bridges faster to build but smaller compared to regular flyovers. “These are just two-lane flyovers.” Alabado said of the structures. However he said these flyovers can help decongest traffic in the area. Each flyover is expected to be finished within six months owing to the modular approach in building.
Meanwhile Alabado said that aside from flyovers, they are eyeing the construction of steel bridges that would connect the second and third districts in the city particularly in Barangay Callawa. The sprawling second and third districts host prime agricultural areas in the city. [PIA 11/RG Alama]
